GP CONSULTATIONS
Before booking an appointment with your GP please consider whether on this occasion, any alternatives might actually be more appropriate and quicker?
For self-limiting condition, such as a common cold, then there are other options that may save you time, get the matter sorted more quickly - and open up appointments with your doctor for more urgent cases. Would the minor ailments scheme at participating pharmacists better deal with simple self-limiting conditions? Minor injuries can be dealt with at the centres detailed on this page.
NHS Direct is an extremely useful source of information and advice and the NHS Choices website also provides a wealth of information for patients on a wide range of medical conditions.
Although we do not wish to stop people from seeing their doctor, or put off people who feel that the doctor appointment is needed, in certain situations, by using common-sense and good judgement it is possible to deliver a better service for everyone - so that when you really need to see the doctor, an appointment is more easily available.
TELEPHONE ADVICE
Telephone advice and consultations with your doctor are available if you feel that your problem can be dealt with or appropriately discussed on the telephone. Please contact our receptionist who will take contact details so the doctor or nurse can call you back later. If it is felt that you need to be seen, you will be advised accordingly during the conversation.
APPOINTMENTS WITH GP
Appointments are for one patient at a time. If there is more than one person needing to see the doctor, separate appointments must be made.
We are aware that it is sometimes difficult to get through to the doctor on the telephone. Be reassured that we do have a number of incoming lines and our staff do answer the telephone promptly.
All consultations are by appointment. You can book non-urgent appointments with a specific doctor one week in advance of the required appointment date. If a patient requires urgent medical attention they will always be seen.
If you are not able to attend your booked appointment, please notify our receptionist as soon as possible so that another patient may be offered the available appointment.
You can make an appointment in one of the following ways:
1. In person during our opening times.
2. By ringing the surgery in normal opening times
3. On-line COMING SOON See SYSTMOnline icon below

APPOINTMENTS
MINOR INJURY UNITS
Patients often attend the hospital Accident & Emergency department when they could be treated just as professionally and usually more quickly at a Minor Injuries Unit. Minor Injuries Units are for patients with -
Cuts/grazes and lacerations
Sprains and strains
Broken bones (fractures)
Bites and stings (including human/animal bites)
Infected wounds
Minor head injuries
Minor eye infections, foreign bodies and scratches
Minor Injuries Units are staffed by highly qualified nurse practitioners who often have more experience and expertise in this kind of treatment than many doctors.
You don’t need an appointment to visit and the waiting times are usually much shorter than those in the Emergency department as emergency staff must give priority to serious and life-threatening conditions.

Make the most of your appointment
Doctors spend an average of eight-10 minutes with each patient. Once you've got an appointment, plan ahead to make sure that you cover everything you want to discuss.
Before you see the doctor, write a list of problems, starting with the most important. List your symptoms so that you don’t forget them. Write down when they started and what makes them better or worse during a 24-hour period. If you have a complicated problem, ask for a longer appointment when you book.
When you see the doctor, bring a friend or relative if you're worried. Research shows that we forget half of what we're told by the doctor when we're stressed, so having a friend with you can help.
Be honest about what you think may be causing the problem, and don’t be embarrassed. Your doctor will have seen and heard it all before.
Be clear about what you want the doctor to do, such as refer you to a specialist or prescribe a different medication. Be assertive if you need to, but always be polite.
Ask the doctor to repeat and explain anything you don’t understand. If there are words you don’t understand, ask what they mean or get the doctor to write them down so that you can look them up later.
If you and your GP decide you need to be referred for specialist tests or treatment, you usually have a right to choose which hospital you go to.
